FOX6 Investigators: Are your kids safe at day care?

MADISON (WITI) — State records show hundreds of rule violations happening at local day cares, but the state-licensed facilities rarely get in trouble. In some instances, they may lose their licenses, but the Department of Children and Families Services say child care facilities have a right to stay open pending an appeal if the “health and safety” of the children is not in question.

Take the April 12 beating of a toddler at a Racine day care for example.bundles

Questions raised over collection bins

RACINE (WITI) — Nearly a dozen purple collection bins have popped up in southeastern Wisconsin over the past few months and many are wondering where exactly their donations are going.

The boxes say “Reuse Books,” and are promoted as a place to donate books, CDs and DVDs. Although it remains unclear who is collecting the items and who is receiving the items.

FOX6 News caught up with two men who were emptying the purple bin at the Racine Centre on Washington Ave.

“We’re trucking them back to Aurora, Illinois,” said Chad Johnson.

The men said they were contracted employees.

“We go through them, we separate the good books from the ones that are just trash,” said Johnson.

Johnson also said he has no idea what happens to the items once he delivers them to the warehouse in Illinois.

Recovered reptiles now getting care at Racine Zoo

RACINE (WITI) — FOX6 News gets a first-hand look at the care being given some reptiles recovered from a Kenosha home. They’re now being cared for at the Racine Zoo.

The reptiles include a crocodile, alligators and a 150-year-old snapping turtle. Zookeepers say the conditions the animals were being kept in were terrible. In the case of the snapping turtle, it was being kept in a tub barely larger than its body.

Keepers at the Racine Zoo says even more reptiles are being kept in quarantine. They include five rattlesnakes and a poisonous lizard known as a Gila Monster.

Kenosha police found all of the reptiles on Monday, May 13th inside a home near 53rd St. and 14th Ave. The reptiles were removed from the home by the Racine Zoo and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

In the backyard of the Kenosha home, police say they found a dead alligator, burnt snake and deer carcass.
