Two trolleys sold at Racine auction

RACINE — The city of Racine sold two 21-year-old trolleys at auction Wednesday.

The trolleys had reached the end of their useful life as public passenger vehicles — and the city could no longer afford to keep them in service.

Racine officials hoped to get between $50,000 and $70,000 for each of the trolleys. One vehicle was sold for $23,100 and the second vehicle with associated spare parts sold for $27,100. Racine originally paid $290,000 for the trolleys.

Jay Price Ruff helped the Racine Area Visitors Bureau raise one-fifth of the total, or $58,000, to qualify for a federal grant. She says it’s sad that the trolleys never generated as much interest as hoped.

Racine plans to auction off its two trolleys

RACINE (AP) — Want to buy a trolley? The City of Racine is auctioning off two trolleys Wednesday, May 16th that it bought about 20 years ago. The city can no longer afford to run the aging vehicles, and no one has stepped forward to operate them.

Al Stanek is the city’s parking and transit-systems manager. He says trolleys similar to the ones Racine owns are priced between $50,000 and $70,000. However, no one knows how much demand there is for these trolleys. The city paid $290,000 for them.

Jay Price Ruff helped the Racine Area Visitors Bureau raise one-fifth of the total, or $58,000, to qualify for a federal grant. She says it’s sad that the trolleys never generated as much interest as hoped.

Rep. Robin Vos Calls for Recall Reform

Rep. Robin Vos Calls for Recall Reform

Last week every community across Wisconsin spent thousands of tax dollars on an unnecessary recall election.

In a few weeks, our local governments will spend that same amount again. Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen estimates that a quarter of a million dollars will be spent on the recall elections in our county. So, it’s not surprising that the total cost of the two recall elections statewide is expected to exceed $16 million.  I think we all can agree that’s too much money. These dollars could be better spent or even better, given back to the taxpayer... Read More
